Following on from the publicity on Saturday, we had a film crew from New Zealand TV turn up at Baldwin Street. They stayed for the one and a half hour Baldwin Street Challenge. The result was an end-of-news feature on the national evening news. During this time, three people managed to reach the top, earning themselves a certificate and a chocolate fish (courtesy of Ken). Only 20 and 24 wheels made it to the top and it was universally agreed that acending Baldwin Street on a Coker was impossible. So thats a challenge to any Coker rider who comes to Dunedin!

A few people managed the slightly lesser challenge of riding down the street. Only one attempted this on a Coker- Hans, who had a brake fitted to his Geared 36 Schlumpf Unicycle. This did not take away the challenge- it merely made it crazy, rather than suicidal. The overwhelming highlight of the day was Hans lurching through the spectators half way down, screaming: I am shitting my pants! in his (authentic) Arnold Schwarzenegger accent.

Following this, the rest of the day was very relaxed. We caught the Taieri Gorge Railway to Pukerangi. Cameras worked overtime to capture the breathtaking vistas, as we wound along the side of the Gorge, through tunnels and across viaducts. Bob, on the PA, kept us carefully informed about noteworthy (and not so noteworthy) scenery and local historical events.

However, it was almost with relief that we grabbed our unicycles and set off on a wonderfully twisty and only moderately hilly road to start the tour riding itself.

The weather was overcast with a sprinkling of rain. The wind was a gentle breeze. It was a perfect start that has left us eager to hit the rail trail tomorrow.

We arrived in Middlemarch to Blind Billys Motor Camp just before dinner. We were starving by the time we pulled up at the Kissing Gate Caf. Hans, the birthday boy (44 years young today!), treated us to a wonderful meal. The group gave him a Superman ball for his birthday, following his morning triumph flying down Baldwin Street.
