Today was spent riding through a plateau surrounded by mountains. The hills were gentle and the riding was easy. The only real challenge was an increasing head wind as we approached Porter's Pass.

Our lunch break was held beside a babbling brook which ran along the drive way to a property. It was a scene worthy of a postcard and it crowned the tour as a whole. Joe did admit to feeling some fatigue following yesterday's ride. Not having had two weeks of conditioning did come through. Along the way we joined an Austrian cyclist named Bridget who joined us for lunch. Since we were heading in the same direction we ended up putting her luggage in the Sag Wagon so she was able to cycle at our speed.

There didn't seem to be any suitable stopping place for the afternoon tea until we reached lake Lyndell. This meant the second stint was rather long and a number of riders ran out of water fighting the head wind under a burning sun. In fact when we resumed riding we discovered that we had stopped only 4 kilometres short of Porter's Pass itself. Naturally we had to stop for more photos at the summit. There before us was the last big descent of the tour riding down to Springfield on the Canterbury Plains. From here on it was literally "down hill"!!!
