We departed springfield on our final days ride with mixed feelings. It was sad that this would be our last ride together, yet there was also some relief in having the end in sight after such an exhausting tour. The tour may have been just over 2wks, but it felt like we had known each other for years and experienced a whole lot of what New Zealand had to offer. We had ridden up the Worlds Steepest street, been blown around in a sandstorm in Central Otago, soaked to the skin along the West Coast, experienced a unicycle wedding, climbed over big mountain passes, and now were on the final leg of the journey along the flat Canterbury Plains. And yes, it was flat! The road to Christchurch was long and straight, and would have made for a nice easy ride, were it not for the incredible road camber that made the unicycle constantly want to veer off the road!
Half way through the ride, we were stopped by a photographer from the Christchurch Newspaper "The Press", who lined us all up for a photo and an interview. After so much publicity during the tour, our riders were now quite accustomed to dealing with the media. Further up the road, we were again stopped but this time it was to meet up with riders from Unisoc- The local Christchurch Unicycle club. They led us through the suburban streets as we entered Christchurch towards our finish in Cathedral Square. We entered the square as a group to finish the tour; over 900km, 16 days, and several million pedal revolutions after setting out from Dunedin.
We finished up with a group dinner at the "Dux de Lux" bar/restaurant before going our separate ways.
